The exhibition titled Amadeo de Souza Cardoso 2016-1916 is taking place at the National Contemporary Art Museum in Lisbon until February 26. It celebrates the artist’s two only solo exhibitions held in Portugal.

The two exhibitions took place at Passos Manuel Garden, in Oporto, and at the Naval Portuguese League, in Lisbon, in 1916, and were commissioned by the artist himself. At the time, the events launched some controversy and debate about what was contemporary art.

The current exhibition is commissioned by Raquel Henriques da Silva and Marta Soares, and it gathers 81 works, 70 percent of which are identified from the original catalogues, according to the website Agenda Cultural de Lisboa, promoted by the City Council. Alongside the exhibition, there will be a series of talks will be held about the artist.
