The first Festa do Livro de Belém (Belém’s Party of the Book, in a free translation to English) starts on September 1, and is dedicated entirely to the Portuguese language literature. It will take place in the gardens of the official residence of the President of Portugal, Belém Palace.
The event was the result of a challenge launched by the Associação Portuguesa de Editores e Livreiros (APEL, in the Portuguese acronym) to the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The event will last until September 4 and will count on the participation of 40 publishing houses and more than 100 authors. Besides book sales, there will be book signing sessions, music, cinema and children’s activities.
One of the highlights of the programme is the performance of singer Cristina Branco, on September 2 and, during the weekend, the screening of the film Memories and Confessions, by director Manoel de Oliveira.
This is an iniative of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic in association with APEL and the City Council.
