The Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues has won the award for Best Director in the International Competition of the 69th edition of the Locarno Film Festival, in Switzerland. The 2016 edition of the festival ended last weekend.

Mr Rodrigues won the award for his feature film O Ornitólogo (The Ornithologist, in English). As the director explained to Macau’s newspaper Ponto Final, the film is a reinterpretation of Saint Anthony’s myth. The action takes place in Portugal’s northern region.

“The idea is to tell a kind of self-discovery journey, of the character, from a classical point of view, with many fictions,” the director told the media outlet.

Mr Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra Da Mata have directed A Última Vez que Vi Macau (The Last Time I Saw Macau; 2012), which was filmed in the territory. According to the newspaper, they both wish to come back to the city to film here once again.
