The Congolese artist Faustin Linyekula is the artist invited for the 2016 edition of the biennial festival Artista na Cidade (Artist in the City, in English), which is being held in several venues in the Portuguese capital city, Lisbon.
According to the organisers, Faustin Linyekula is an artist “who employs various art forms — dance, theatre, music, video, literature — to create an outspoken political work”. “Throughout his work, he presents a continuous narrative of colonial and post-colonial (if any) history, he mourns the complete devastation of his country at the hands of never-ending wars, he exposes the ruling kleptocracy, and he denounces the misery and hunger of his fellow countrymen,” the organisers add.
The Artista na Cidade project is aimed at exhibiting existing artworks, but also at driving collaborations “between artists and organisations in Lisbon and the guest artist”.
Under the project, Faustin Linyekula has been performing in several venues in Lisbon since January. There will be eight more from October to the end of the year. Details can be found here.
