It looks like Desperate Housewives in the surface, but it is darker and funnier at the same time. Big Little Lies an American dark comedy drama HBO miniseries, starring Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley.
It only has one season and it seems this will be the only season. Bit Little Lies starts with a murder and all through the episodes the investigation continues with different witnesses commenting the main characters. Yet, the murder seems almost unimportant, as if an extra to the whole story.
The story is about three friends and mothers (Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley), their husbands, ex-husbands, non-existent boyfriends, their families in a rich neighbourhood. But with a top-notch cast, the story is much more than that, as the performances bring depth to the characters. It is a battle for power and status between the Monterey moms, giving way for some amazing female performances.
Nicole Kidman plays a domestic violence victim and has mentioned she felt so terribly ill after playing this character. Her story is like the story of many others, who think it is all normal, but it is not. An extraordinary performance.
The plot is compelling, as the viewers are kept interested without knowing the identity of the murder victim, of the potential suspect and of the basic story behind it. Still, throughout the evolution of the series, the viewer starts making a choice, on who he wants to see killed.
Created and written by David E. Kelley, this miniseries is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée. Funny and addictive, this is one of those series you keep pushing play, anxious to know what’s next.
